Springtime can mean many things: the arrival of daffodils, flower shows and occasional sunshine. But as lovely as it all is, one of the most important days in March is one dedicated to celebrating the women in our life that we look to for support, love and guidance.
For supermarkets and independent florists, Mother’s Day marks the beginning of a packed summer calendar; many outlets will compete to produce gloriously fragrant and colourful bouquets (many for a steal at under £50) that vary in species, from pastel-hued stocks to pretty roses.
It all started in West Virginia. After the death of her mother in 1905, Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis sought out to honor her mother. She went on to send 500 carnations - a symbol of motherhood, faith, love, beauty and charity - to the local church as a sign of her sorrow and respect for her passing.
Churchgoers and locals were so impressed by this act that they joined together to lobby for Mother’s Day to become an official holiday. And they succeeded. President Woodrow Wilson announced the holiday in 1914, which saw florists and gardeners expand their offering to meet demand.
Jarvis, however, upon realising the mass commercialisation of her mother’s favourite spring flowers was not impressed - at one point, she even tried to stop carnations sellers. But the celebrations took off, spreading across the country and, eventually, across the pond, and we continue to do so today.
Here we’ve compiled our favourite bouquets for under £50, so you can spoil mum without breaking the bank.
